It’s not a easy question to answer. On some level we all experience trauma - the loss of people or pets that we love, car accidents, the loss of a job or living situation, or really painful experiences at the hands of other people - all of these and more represent situations in which we might experience lasting effects of trauma.
Essentially, if you are experience symptoms like avoidance of situations that you used to enjoy or engage in freely (e.g. avoid driving your car after an accident), panic attacks or anxiety when thinking about painful situations, or other difficult symptoms, you may be experiencing trauma and could benefit from reaching out to a trusted counsellor.
We offer free consultations to help you determine if we can help with the experiences that you are having.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a technique that was developed specifically to help with trauma. We know that traumatic memories are stored in such a way that it impacts different areas of our body (there’s a great book called The Body Keeps the Score that talks about this in detail). We also know that the body processes memories in a pretty specific way. EMDR takes advantage of what we know about the connection between our mind and our body to reprocess painful memories in more helpful way.

We know that it’s possible to recover from trauma. EMDR and other techniques are very effective at helping reprocess traumatic memories. With mental health counselling - like all health practices - it’s impossible to give a guarantee but we know that people tend to be resilient and can overcome their trauma and learn to thrive!
